We?ve all had those moments where our shoes get entirely soaked because the rain is too strong or we accidentally step on a puddle. Leather shoes are the most badly affected by water. They will shrink and harden if not immediately taken care of. Here’s my step-by-step guide to making sure your leather shoes survive the next downpour.

1. Remove debris and excess water. Use a soft cloth to remove soil and dirt from your shoes.

2. Stuff your shoes with paper towels. This will retain the shape of your shoes, prevent shrinking and absorb moisture from the inside.

3. Wrap them in paper towels. This will absorb moisture from the outside and further hasten the drying process.

4. Leave your shoes to dry overnight. Change the paper towels as necessary. Don?t use them for at least another 24 hours. If you have wooden shoe trees, remove the newspaper and insert them.

5. If you see that your shoes have watermarks on them use a cloth soaked in a little table vinegar diluted with water and rub them on the affected areas. Pat the area with a soft dry cloth after a few seconds.

6. After your shoes have completely dried give them a nice coat of polish. Finish off with a coat of dubbin to condition and prevent future penetration of water.

Charlie Casely-Hayford, though only 22 years old has already made his mark on the creative scene in London and abroad. After short stints at i-D magazine, Creative Review and the White Cube gallery, Hoxton, Charlie studied fine art in Florence, attended Saint Martins, and read a degree in History of Art at the Courtauld Institute of Art. Throughout his late teens Charlie undertook an intensive apprenticeship in his father’s studio, where he studied design, menswear history, and technical skills.
